How Solar Power and Advocacy Brightens Maternal and Newborn Health Care in Uganda

Young people (aged 0-24) make up nearly half of the world’s population. The majority, 90%, live in low- and middle-income countries. And while young people may be consulted, they rarely have the opportunity to lead or share in decision-making on issues that affect them, including their mental health. Small bites, big threat: Canada joins the fight against vector-borne diseases, improving maternal and child health in developing nations

…diseases (VBDs) Bites from insects that result in diseases (such as malaria, dengue, kala-azar, sleeping sickness and elephantiasis) are horrendous but mainly affect the poor and neglected. To mark this day,  Grand Challenges Canada wishes to sensitize the public on our efforts to control and prevent vector-borne diseases, especially those  that impact maternal and child…vulnerable due to poverty. Apart from malaria, all these other vector-borne diseases are Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), so called because they generally receive low levels of funding for treatment and research, yet their collective impact on health is significant. Ukweli Test Strips: Pilot study funded by Grand Challenges Canada enables social innovation to scale their venture and save women’s lives

Often, mothers do not have the disposable income or time required to travel long distances to health facilities. Consequently, women wait until their condition becomes life-threatening.
