The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is responsible for the administration of international peer review of applications in response to Grand Challenges Canada’s grant calls. The results of CIHR-led peer review guides the awarding of grants by Grand Challenges Canada according to international standards of excellence.
Saving Brains
Saving Brains supports bold ideas to improve early brain and child development globally. The portfolio focuses on three areas of healthy development (health & nutrition, enrichment and protection) that, when addressed together, set up a child to reach his or her full potential.
Saving Brains is a partnership of Grand Challenges Canada, Aga Khan Foundation Canada, the Bernard van Leer Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The ELMA Foundation, Grand Challenges Ethiopia, the Maria Cecilia Souto Vidigal Foundation, the Palix Foundation, the UBS Optimus Foundation and World Vision Canada.
Saving Lives at Birth
Grand Challenges Canada, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) have joined together to support Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development. Together, we call for groundbreaking prevention and treatment approaches for pregnant women and newborns in poor, hard-to-reach communities around the time of childbirth.
Every Woman Every Child Innovation Marketplace
The Every Woman Every Child Innovation Marketplace is a strategic alliance of development innovation organizations including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, the United States Agency for International Development, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation and UBS Optimus Foundation. The Marketplace is hosted at Grand Challenges Canada.
Water Innovation Engine
Established by the United Nations High Level Panel on Water and led by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the Water Innovation Engine is a pioneering partnership to stimulate more innovation and investment in the water sector. The Engine brings together governments, funders, and entrepreneurs to foster innovations that accelerate impact for water-related aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals, with the aim of advancing the wellbeing of less-advantaged populations in low- and middle-income countries.
Creating Hope in Conflict: A Humanitarian Grand Challenge
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, with support from Grand Challenges Canada, have launched Creating Hope in Conflict: A Humanitarian Grand Challenge. This challenge seeks to fund and accelerate solutions that enable life-saving or life-improving assistance to reach the most vulnerable and hardest-to-reach people in conflict-generated humanitarian crises.

Being is an international mental health initiative, working toward a world where young people feel well and thrive. It is hosted by Grand Challenges Canada in partnership with Fondation Botnar, United for Global Mental Health, the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR), and the Science for Africa Foundation.
