"iGBV: Breaking the Silence" is a mobile app-based screening and referral management tool for aid workers to measure the prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) and deliver focused non-specialized support at scale in six refugee camps in Burundi. Following group GBV awareness sessions, those wanting to be screened will see aid workers who will use the mobile app to identify GBV survivors. For those identified as survivors, the app will provide the aid worker with guidelines on providing basic support. For more serious cases, a referral path to GBV service providers will be established on iGBV. For each referred survivor the app generates or “opens” a new case in the referral system. The case will be “closed” by the referred GBV service provider when appropriate care is received. As part of safety planning, iGBV supports aid workers and survivors to jointly identify specific measures to be taken to keep a survivor safe from an offender. For example, this may include identifying possible escape routes to safety, knowing nearby organizations that can provide help, and putting survivors in touch with support groups. The project will establish referral pathways to 26 GBV service providers in Burundi and provide female refugees (aged 15+) with GBV education.
