The project will involve a randomized control trial in South Africa to assess the benefits of augmenting and increasing ultrasounds, by comparing one ultrasound (at 18-20 weeks) with two variations: an ultrasound (18-20 weeks) with counselling to increase maternal well-being, interest in and knowledge of child development, and a second ultrasound with counselling (32-36 weeks). Partners will be encouraged to attend ultrasounds to increase their involvement in child development. Mothers and infants will be assessed at six weeks and six months of age on child development and growth, breastfeeding, mother-infant attachment, maternal well-being, knowledge of child development, father involvement and pre- and postnatal clinic attendance.
