Grand Challenges Canada

This World Prematurity Day, we recognize the innovators around the world whose bold ideas are improving access to quality healthcare for more than 13 million babies who are born prematurely each year. According to UNICEF, preterm birth is the leading cause of death for children under five. Many children who survive face lifelong disabilities due to inadequate healthcare.

Grand Challenges Canada, with funding from the Government of Canada, is proud to support Vayu Global Health’s efforts to provide blended oxygen to newborns, babies and children through their low-cost, high-quality bubble CPAP device.

The Vayu bubble CPAP does not require electricity, compressed air, or advanced bioengineering support, and doesn’t rely on supply chains to function. The device, which is manufactured in Kenya, has already been used to provide life-saving blended oxygen to more than 130,000 babies across 28 countries.
