As we mark World Toilet Day, a global call to action for improved sanitation and hygiene, we’re shining a spotlight on Pit Vidura—an innovation transforming access to safe sanitation in Kigali, Rwanda. In many urban and peri-urban regions, sanitation challenges persist, impacting public health and community well-being. Pit Vidura provides essential pit latrine and septic emptying services, focusing on areas often overlooked due to difficult access. The company’s mission extends beyond just emptying latrines; it aims to ensure safe, hygienic, and affordable solutions for households, uplifting the overall health standard of entire communities.
Syeda Zaki, Portfolio Manager for Sanitation at Grand Challenges Canada, praised Pit Vidura’s innovative approach, highlighting their commitment to bridging disparities and delivering essential sanitation services. “Their focus on underserved areas in and around Kigali is helping to improve access to vital services, fostering healthier communities,” she said.
Grand Challenges Canada’s Portfolio Manager, Pulkit Aggrwal, recently visited Pit Vidura and sat down with Managing Director, Nicholas Kuria, to learn more about how they provide safe sanitation in Rwanda.
Nicholas explains how Pit Vidura’s innovative model combines community-focused strategies with research and development, allowing them to subsidize costs for low-income households using revenue from corporate clients.
