Lixil (Japan) has developed its "SATO" series of sustainable and affordable toilets as a sanitation social enterprise. The toilets range from $2 to $10, use up to 80% less water, and feature a flap under the seat that seals the toilet after use, putting a barrier between fecal waste and people to block odours, flies and other disease vectors, and to mitigate the dangers and risks over open defecation or pit latrines.
