Muhumbili University is developing and testing an android mobile application for reporting incidents of violence against female commuters across different modes of public transportation in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The objective of the app is to measure the incidence of violence against women (VAW) and test interventions that encourage reporting these incidents experienced or witnessed on public transportation. The app records women’s geo-spatial location at the time of reporting and mode of transport being used. The mobile app provides information about where to report and how to respond to VAW through information related app feature that provides general information on the law and the closest location to a police gender desk to report a crime against women. In addition, an integrated safety response system on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) provides information on security personnel’s location at the closest BRT station. The application also tracks women’s reporting of these incidents and how incidents were resolved. It will also allow women to access information about services relevant for those who experience acts of harassment and GBV in public spaces. The impact of behavioural nudges such as reminders or positive reinforcement messaging on VAW reporting will also be tested through the app to evaluate how these nudges impact increased reporting within the app and reporting to the police or BRT security.
