Sanitation and Health Rights in India (SHRI) builds community toilets to address India’s public health problem of outdoor defecation. To offset maintenance costs, waste is stored in a biogas digester, where it decomposes to form methane gas. This energy source generates electricity, which is used to power a water filtration system. SHRI distributes this water to the community for a nominal fee, creating a revenue stream that helps maintain and sustain SHRI’s facility operations.
