After developing a technology to add bioavailable iron to tea and demonstrating its effectiveness in-vitro and in-vivo, this project is the critical next step in a comprehensive plan for large-scale implementation. The project will measure the positive health effects of iron-fortified tea in Tanzania and India. Adjustments to the colour and taste of the fortified tea will be undertaken, as needed, and scale-up will be initiated in cooperation with tea formulators and manufacturers in India and Canada, with the goal of reducing maternal death in rural populations at a cost of only 20¢ per person, in a manner transparent to the customer.
