Issue
Employees of large corporations with a social conscience already take care of the medical expenses of their low-income, domestic household staff (drivers, maids, guards, etc.)
However, this is done in a very ad-hoc manner that does not leverage the scale, systems and processes of corporate-quality health insurance.
Solution
The Naya Jeevan Foundation operates a hybrid social enterprise that provides low-income families with access to affordable, high-quality healthcare in Pakistan.
Naya Jeevan’s integrated health plan targets previously uninsured, formal and informal workers making less than $8 per day, who are affiliated with multinational corporations and corporate value chains.
Naya Jeevan provides a market-based loyalty/incentive program, co-financed by the corporation, leveraging corporate value chains as an innovative approach to creating sustainable insurance coverage.
Through risk pooling, Naya Jeevan also enables corporations to negotiate lower rates on the health insurance coverage for their managerial and executive staff.
Outcome
Results have shown the feasibility of using this approach to provide health insurance and increase availability of health services for employees of multinational corporations.
A total of 12,200 individuals have accessed the service.
The project enrolled 1,000 micro-entrepreneurs within 52 days of project initiation. There was a 25% adoption by micro-entrepreneurs of a Mobile Money Micropayment system to facilitate affordability and expedite outpatient clinical reimbursement within 30 days of enrolment (original target was 15%).
Knowledge of the project was disseminated through a number of seminars and symposia.
Evidence obtained from this grant recently enabled Naya Jeevan to win the highly competitive Rockefeller Foundation Centennial Innovation Challenge.
Naya Jeevan continues to partner with multinationals to roll out this model.
A total of $350,000 has been received from USAID and ILO–MIF (International Labor Organization–Microinsurance Innovation Facility) to support the project.
